In California, the safest way to think about it is this: if you want to operate as the contractor and take on larger jobs, you should confirm the classification and licensing rules before you guess your way into a problem.
How do I know which exam I need?
In California, most applicants take the Law and Business exam plus the trade exam for their classification. Some classifications or situations are handled differently, and CSLB can waive exams in limited cases. The point is to match the exam to the actual license path, not just the kind of work you do day to day.
What if I am not sure I qualify yet?
That is common. In California, CSLB generally wants at least four years of journey-level, foreman, supervising employee, contractor, or owner-builder experience in the classification you are applying for. The real issue is usually not ambition. It is whether your experience can be documented the right way.
Which study option is right for me?
If you already know your exam and you are good at staying on track, self-paced may be enough.
